Several studies have established a link between hepatitis C and lymphoma. However, a new study in South Korea suggests a causal link between the chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Engels et al. recruited 603,585 participants from the Korean Cancer Prevention Study and tracked them for up to 14 years. Those who tested positive for the hepatitis B surface antigen were significantly more likely to develop non-Hodgkins lymphoma than those who tested negative.

“One plausible mechanism could be chronic activation of B cells in HBV-related hepatitis, predisposing to DNA damage and transformation into lymphoma,” wrote Engels et al.
