PCBs Disrupt Thyroid Functioning in Just Four Months   1 comment

There’s an abundance of evidence that endocrine disruptors, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), interfere with a variety of bodily functions, but scientists are still struggling to decipher exactly how these toxins go about their disruptive ways. Researchers, however, are using increasingly sophisticated techniques to uncover the specific ways such pollutants impact biological systems.

Dicentrarchus labraxA recent study presented at the 17th Benelux Congress of Zoology shows that exposure to PCBs disrupts thyroid functioning in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax). The researchers exposed the fish to environmentally-relevant doses of PCB mixtures. After 120 days, the scientists measured a variety of internal structures under a microscope. They found:

  • a greater heterogeneity of thyroid follicle diameter
  • higher epithelial cell heights
  • accumulation of colloid droplets

Thyroid GlandsAllow me to explain. Thyroid glands control protein and hormone regulation in the body. If the thyroid is not functioning properly, the body’s ability to monitor several basic needs is upset. These researchers found evidence that “the contamination of PCB mixtures can induce a hyperactivity of the thyroid tissue” (ORBi) after only four months. According to endocrineweb.com, hyperactive thyroid in humans has been shown to cause

  • Palpitations
  • Heat intolerance
  • Nervousness
  • Insomnia
  • Breathlessness
  • Increased bowel movements
  • Light or absent menstrual periods
  • Fatigue
  • Fast heart rate
  • Trembling hands
  • Weight loss
  • Muscle weakness
  • Warm moist skin
  • Hair loss
  • Staring gaze

This research helps us to understand the specific mechanisms through which PCBs alter bodily functioning and is part of the growing mass of literature demonstrating the harm of these environmental toxins. To read more about this research, click here.

  1. Wow, only four months to seriously alter the way a complex biological organism works. It took nature and evolution thousands of years, but we’re impatient, and want results now! Keep changing our physiological makeup by the day!
