9 Tips For Avoiding Cancer-Causing Xenoestrogens   Leave a comment

The word of the day is “xenoestrogens.” A subset of endocrine disruptors, xenoestrogens refer to foreign chemicals that mimic estrogen. They disrupt our hormonal functioning and many xenoestrogens have been linked to cancer, birth defects and a weakened immune system. Known xenoestrogens include polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), DDT, parabens, bisphenol A, atrazine and food preservative BHA. While it would be preferable to avoid these toxins altogether, that is more difficult than you might think. According to Dr. Judy Roth, “they are present in our soil, water, air, food supply, personal care and household products.” However, we can make certain lifestyle adjustments to help reduce our consumption of xenoestrogens. Below are a list of helpful tips from Dr. Elizabeth Smith, MD:

  1. Use glass or ceramics whenever possible to store food and water. Heat up your food using a glass or ceramic bowl covered with dish. When plastic is heated, it diffuses very rapidly into food.
  2. Use a simple detergent with less chemicals; Nature Clean is a good choice for both laundry detergent and dish washing detergent.
  3. Simple Soap is a safe choice for shampoo and a body soap.
  4. Use natural pest control not pesticides.
  5. Avoid Synthetic Chemicals – Healthy Living in a Toxic World by Cynthia Fincher PhD. is a good place to start.
  6. Don’t use herbicides; use a cup of salt in a gallon of vinegar.
  7. Buy hormone free meats to eat.
  8. Buy “Organic” produce, produce grown without pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizer or hormones.
  9. Use Condoms without spermicide for Birth control instead of Birth Control Pills. Use Natural Progesterone instead of HRT.
