PCBs in Trinity River   Leave a comment

PCB contamination in the Trinity River in Texas is so bad that in several areas it is illegal to consume fish caught in these parts of the river. PCBs were banned in 1977, but the ban did not require any devices already using PCBs to be replaced. Although there have been successful missions to cleanse rivers in Maryland and Norway of PCBs, the Trinity River problem is more delicate because the current methods for removing PCBs from rivers would disturb the sediment which has other negative environmental implications. New methods are being developed for PCB removal by Texas A&M University at Galveston researchers. Officials do seem to agree on one unfortunate fact: there is no quick fix.
