PCBs (known to cause cancer) cleaned up in school   Leave a comment

A month after elevated levels of PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, were found at an elementary school…things are finally getting back to normal for students and teachers. The principal claims they are a bit cramped but happy to be together with minimal disruption to the education process.  According to the EPA, PCB standards for children aged 6-12 is 0.30 or below. Given that readings were above this level in the fall, the school spent over $25, 000 on testing to find out that all the classrooms on the second floor had levels above 0.30 with the highest being 0.47.  The PCBs which are believed to be coming from old window putty and caulking are a dangerous carcinogen. The interesting thing is that state and federal experts say it only causes harm after prolonged exposure.  They even claimed there was no risk to students in those classrooms.  It is disappointing to hear this response since we are unsure of the variety of negative long term responses for these kids. Luckily, all the classrooms were relocated and monthly testing will be conducted.
